The Great Fundamental Principle of the Universe 1888
In the late 1880s, Stewart began appearing in advertisements attesting to the miracle cures of Drs. Darrin of Portland, OR, who used some form of electro shock therapy to supposed cure everything from "congestion of the brain" and dyspepsia, to dropsy, deafness, and being cross-eyed, to Stewarts sciatica: "Experiments by scientists are constantly and surely proving electricity to be the great motor power of creation. Electricity is the most powerful chemical agent, as well as the basis of chemical action. It is the primal element of light and heat; the promotor of life, and the sustainer of health. Disease yields readily to its magnetic touch, and even unrelenting death is averted by its presence. Thousards of afflicted and suffering beas witness to its healing power. The electro-magnetic as practiced by the Drs. Darrin has revolutionized the practice of medicine, as is shown by the following:...S. F. Hoskinson, Port Blakely, W.T.; Sciatic rheumatism. Cured." The attached is a sample of these advertisements that appeared frequently in local Portland and Seattle newspapers of the time. The fact that electricity is neither chemical nor inherently magnetic speaks to how little understanding there was of electricity at this time and the quack nature of Drs. Darrin's treatments.
