The first wife must have died after 1841 given Polly Botts, age 9 years. Rufus married Jane circa 1850 after the death of her first husband Joseph Higgs who died sometime after 1846. The Higgs children are daughters of Jane and Joseph Higgs. Curiously missing from the list is Sarah J. Higgs who would have been about 3 years old in 1850.

"Mrs. Mary Snelling, of Solomon unused to the ways of the law, visited our good-looking bachelor district clerk Thursday and asked for papers divorcing her from Geo. F. Snelling. Mr. Smith regretted that his powers did not extend that far and referred the applicant to an attorney. This morning suit was filed for her by C. S. Crawford in which Mrs. Snelling accuses her husband, to whom she was married at Salina in March, 1886, of extreme cruelty and with calling her "a liar, hypocrite and thief," his actions finally compelling her to leave him.
