FISHER, Harry Leslie
1902 - 1980 (77 years)-
Name FISHER, Harry Leslie Birth 15 Jul 1902 Blandinsville, McDonough Co., IL CENSUS 12 Mar 1910 Blandinsville, McDonough Co., IL [1] 1910 US Census: E. D. No. 42, Blandinsville Township, McDonough Co., IL, p 9A RESI 16 Apr 1914 Colusa, Hancock Co., IL [2] Ella Fisher working new Colusa
This article suggests that Ella and children may have left Orville Fisher as early as 1914. Colusa here is Colusa IL, located near Dallas City IL about 20 miles from her previous home with Orville in Blandinsville. By 1920 Ella and children have removed to Rice Ce o., KS. That she is writing to the Blandinsville Star-Gazette to apprise them of her whereabouts suggests she retained friends in Blandinsville after leaving Orville. Given Orville's many alcohol-related criminal activities including the the attempted rape of 5 y/o Ester Bailey in 1906 for which Orville served three years in the Men's Penitentiary in Fort Madison IA, one imagines Ella's was a very tragic and sympathetic figure in Blandinsville and well supported in her leaving.RESI 8 Aug 1918 Lyons, Rice Co., KS [3] - "Mrs. Orville Fisher and son Leslie are now at Lyons, Kan. where Leslie is working on a farm and doing nicely."
Ella Fisher and son Leslie in Lyons KS CENSUS 29 Jan 1920 Harrison Township, Rice Co., KS [4] - Family is shown living among Mexican salt miners in Kansas while father Orville B. Fisher is found living with his father Abel Fisher in Blandinsville, McDonough Co., IL. Ella left Orville sometime between the Apr 1910 census (where Ella and children Paul and Leslie are found living with Orville in Blandinsville IL) and this census in Jan 1920. Ella and Orville did not get divorced before she left because he sues her for divorce and custody of Leslie in Jul 1920. Note in this census Ella lists herself as widowed. One imagines tensions were high between Orville and Ella from 1906 when he pled guilty to assault to commit rape of 5 y/o Esther Bailey in Burlington IA in 1906 (article above),. Ella and the children were forced to stand with him at sentencing which must have been very hard. One wonders at the type of husband/father Orville was when released from prison in Nov 1909 to cause Ella to leave with the children without a divorce. He is known to have had an alcohol problem from at least 1898 when is was first arrested for stealing liquor. Orville presumably loses the custody suit as Leslie remains in Kansas.
- No occupations are listed for any of the family despite both Paul and brother Leslie being old enough to work. How did family support itself in Kansas?
