- Working at the Girls Industrial School. Girls committed to the school were deemed in need of correctional work by Kansas courts. They were often poor, homeless or had criminal complaints due to social or economic circumstances. The girls were taught a variety of subjects including domestic arts, healthcare, fine arts, religious instruction, and school subjects. They were involved in the daily operations of the farm, garden, and kitchen, and also hosted and organized holiday events. The goal was to help the girls reintegrate into society. The school also had a darker side. In 1935-1936, superintendent Lula Coyner, had no 62 girls transported to the Women’s Prison Hospital in Lansing for force-sterilization. This series of films made in 1938 touts the good work of the Girls Industrial School, while conveniently leaving out the school's history of forced-sterilizations.
