- The Botts children must be Rufus' children by a first wife before Jane. The first wife must have died after 1841 given Polly Botts, age 9 years. Rufus married Jane circa 1850 after the death of her first husband Joseph Higgs who died sometime after 1846. The Higgs children are daughters of Jane and Joseph Higgs. Curiously missing from the list is Sarah J. Higgs who would have been about 3 years old in 1850.

"Mrs. Jane Botts, the widow of the late Rufus Botts, who has been blind for nearly six years, went to Quincy last month and was placed under the care of Dr. Wood, the celebrated occulist of that city, who successfully removed cataracts from each eye with an interval of three weeks between operations. Aunt Jane returned home seeing and of course very happy that she could once more after a long and weary darkness of so many sears, see her children and grandchildren. - "Mrs. Jane Botts passed away on Sunday night last. After funeral services the burial took place in Novelty cemetery on Tuesday."
