Astoria Clatsop Co., OR [1, 10, 11] |
- Per death certificate:
Residence: Americus, Kansas
Occupation: Laborer, seaman
Informant: William Stephens, Emporia, Kansas (cousin)
Cause: crushing of abdomen and perforation of intestines
Date of accident: Oct 3, 1918, operated on Oct 4
Died St. Mary's Hospital Astoria, Oregon Oct 5, 1918, no autopsy
Lists date of burial as Oct 7 but local newspapers give date as Oct 13
- "He was at work on a vessel running between Portland and Astoria. The cause of his death was an accident. He was loading salmon on the vessel going down the gang plank with several cases on a truck when the decline caused the truck to get the best of him and the salmon fell off catching him between it and the door jam crushing him badly. He was hurt Thursday afternoon Oct. 10 afternoon, October 10th, at about 2 o'clock and died Saturday 9:15. An operation was deemed necessary and performed but it was to no avail." The dates of Oct 10 for injury and Oct 12 for Arthur's death are clearly incorrect as his father W. H. Craig was informed of his death before Oct 9 (see news article above). His headstone states he died on Oct 5 consistent with the date reported in the Emporia Gazette article re Arthur's funeral following.
- "Arthur Craig was in the government employ, working on a freighter at Portland. Ore (accident actually occurred in Astoria, OR). He was crushed when some cases of salmon fell on him, and received Internal Injuries which resulted in his death."
