- From his obituary: John A Daugherty died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Wheeldon, in Brownsville NE on 4 April 1921, after a lingering illness. He was born in Crawford, County, Illinois 7 Jun 1839, and at the time of his death was aged 81 years, 9 months and 11 days. He came to Blandinsville IL when a young man and on 14 Oct 1860 was united in marriage to Margaret Phoebe Fisher, youngest sister of Abel Fisher of Blandinsville. In 1873 they moved to Brownville NE where be was a blacksmith for one year and engaged in farming. For twelve years he served as the chief of police of Brownville at the time when the city was one of the larger cities of the state. "He was a fearless and efficient official, a man of strong independent views, and one of be most upright men of his community. He was the father of nine children whom be taught to live uprightly and are all people of high character." Three sons, T. C. Daugherty of Auburn NE, J. H. Daugherty of Haxtum CO, and C. L. Daugherty of Green Forest AR, and four daughters, Mrs. M. J. Percy of Wilbur NE; Mrs. Lizzie Headley of Brownville NE, Mrs. Ada Kleckner of Omaha NE, and Mrs. Fred Wheeldon of Brownville NE survived him as well as one brother, Christopher Daugherty of Steel City NE, one sister, Mrs. Addie Sly of Clark SD, and several grandchildren. The funeral services were held at his daughter's home in Brownsville, conducted by Rev. D. A. McCullough, pastor of the Auburn Methodist church. His remains were laid to rest in the Brownville (Walnut Grove) cemetery. One of the peculiar features of his burial is the fact that John, his mother, and his wife "were all carried to their graves by six grandsons, who were the pall bearers."
