**Aerovox is was major maker of capacitors and electrical components from 1938 to the late-1970s. In 1977, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) used to manufacture capacitors were declared highly carcinogenic and their use was banned by the federal government. In 1997, the Aerovox site (buildings, grounds and adjacent harbor) was found to be highly contaminated with PCBs and closed. Aerovox agreed to demolish and cap the site in 1999, but declared bankruptcy in 2001. In 2006, the U.S. EPA designated the site a superfund site for priority demolition. Demolition finally began in April 2011. Remediation of the site was completed in 2012.
