    Mr. Thomas Ashby was born in Nelson Co. Ky. Sept. 19. 1838 and died in Blandinsville Ill. Feb. 2 1908 aged 69 years 4 mo. 14 days.

    He enlisted in 1861 a member of company K sixth regiment and was transferred to company A company A May 10, 1862, he was a regimental teamster until Apr. 1864. He fought at Rocky Top Resaca and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta, at Peachtree, Intrenchment and Utov Creeks, both days at Jonesboro and in the mounted engagements serving in all 4 years and one month. Apr. 10, 1867 he was married to Mary Sweasy and came to Blandinsville in 1869. To them were born two daughters Shrilda Bell who is Mrs. Bell Pensinger and Hattie Jane who died at the age of two years.

    His wife died Apr. 26, 1872. He was united in marriage Dec. 27, 1862 to Miss Nan Walters who survives him. To them were born seven children two sons and five daughter the sons died in infancy. He leaves to mourn his loss six daughters Mrs Bell Pensinger, Mrs Mary Farris, Mrs. Florence Fisher, Mrs. Dolly White, and Mrs Pearl Ashby all of Blandinsville and Mrs. Nellie Neilson of Denver, Colo., and fifteen grandchildren. Also three brother and four sisters all of Kentucky.

    He was converted in early life and lived a faithful and consistant christian. He was a faithful member of the Baptist church of this place and was janitor of the church for 18 years feeling as the Psalmist said, “I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of the Lord than to dwell in the tents of wickedness,” The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the Baptist church Rev. O . ?anger officiating after which internment was made in the south cemetery.
