ANDERSON, Andrew Gustaf |
- To be fully vetted: Andrew Gustaf "Gus" Anderson was born Andrew Gustaf Swenson. He left Swenden when he was about 19 years old. He was a sailor for four years until his ship docked in Port Madison, Washington in 1873 and he decided he didn't want to leave. He changed his name to Andrew Gustaf Anderson and wore a long beard so that he wouldn't be caught for jumping ship. It was quite common for men to jump ship at Port Blakely and "Gus" Anderson's son Ralph wrote that over the years his father let dozens of men hide at his place until their ships sailed again. Gus Anderson was first employed on the George Meig farm. He used his gardening experience to raise produce for the cookhouse at the mill in Port Madison. In 1873 Gus Anderson filed a claim on an 80 acre homestead. His homestead was about a half mile south of Island Center. The lumber for the Anderson house was brought from the Port Madison mill to Winslow on a raft and then brought by oxen over the old Skid Road from Eagle Harbor to Island Center. That first house became the first story of the southern end of the eventually completed Anderson house. He added onto the house between 1873 and 1876. Gus's son Ralph Waldo Anderson lived in this house at Route 4, Box 4693 on Bainbridge Island until his own death in 1979. In 1879, Andrew Gus Anderson married Ida Laurel Hoskinson, daughter of Riley M. and Martha (Fisher) Hoskinson, pioneer settlers of Bainbridge Island. Ida was born March 10, 1854 in Rushville, Illinois and died May 24, 1936 in Manette, Washington. Gus Anderson was the biggest chicken farmer on Bainbridge Island. He had 3,000 chickens, and also raised hogs, cattle and other livestock. Gus also supplied produce that he grew to the Port Blakely and Port Madison cookhouses. Andrew Gus Anderson died of heart failure. He dropped dead on a path near his house on Bainbridge Island. Mr. Anderson's funeral was held at the hall at Island Center and was attended by nearly all the residents of the Island. His tombstone reads as follows: Andrew G. Anderson born Jan. 3, 1847 died May 18, 1916 Ida L. Anderson born 1854 died 1936. Andrew Gus and Ida Laurel (Hoskinson) Anderson had four children: Roland "Rollie" Anderson (born Aug. 10, 1881-died after 1938); Theodore Anderson (Feb. 24, 1883-died between 1916 and 1938); Ethel Eunice Anderson (April 20, 1886-April 5, 1938), wife of Emil B. Olsen; and Ralph Waldo Anderson (Dec. 26, 1887-June 21, 1979). Ralph W. Anderson contributed information about his parents to the Bainbridge Island Historical Society and Museum and the the book "Kitsap County History".

Andrew and Ida Hoskinsin house 1946 "OLD HOUSES are hard to find on Bainbridge. Andrew Anderson, a Swedish sailor who "jumped ship" and settled on the island in early days, and his wife, Ida Hoskinson Anderson, daughter of the "weather man," carried the boards for this home on their backs more than four miles from the head of Eagle Harbor to Island Center. Their son, Ralph, still lives in the house and uses the original well, which once had sweep and an oaken bucket." |
