Death 22 Mar 1944  Mount Thumb, Papua New Guinea Find all individuals with events at this location  [4, 5, 6, 7, 8
    • Died in World War II when the B-24D Liberator code-named "Weezie" (Serial Number 42-41081) on which Emory was a passenger crashed into Mount Thumb, Papua New Guinea (PNG) en route from Jackson or 7 Mile Drome airfield at Port Moresby, PNG to Nadzab Airfield, PNG on 22 Mar 1944. The entire crew was declared dead shortly after and later memorialized on tablets of the missing at the Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Phillipes. The location of the crash site remained a mystery until April 1982 when local villagers led a team from the Army's Honolulu-based Central Identification Laboratory to the site. The team recovered fewer than 1000 bones, but using DNA were able to positively identify the remains of the three flight crew and all nineteen passengers including 2nd Lt. Emory C. Young. The complete story is documented in Susan Sheehan's book A Missing Plane (Berkley, 1987, ISBN-10: 0425105539)
