Abel Fisher shows photo of Vicksburg Civil War monument 1917
Provides a bit of Abel's Civil War history noting that he fought at Vicksburg in 1863 and re-visited the site 1917 to see the Vicksburg memorial, subject of the photo talked about in this article. Abel was very proud of his Civil War service, putting flags on soldiers graves for every July 4, and attending many of the local ceremonies and reunions in the early 1900s honoring Civil Way veterans.

Abel testifies re insane woman 1911
Abel testifies re insane woman 1911
In clear who pressed this case. A hearing was held in the Duffield home "as to the sanity of Mrs. John Duffield....Abe Fisher told of violent language he had heard her use and of the cruelty he had seen her exercise toward the children of Mr. Duffield who were her step-children. Marion Bond testified to similar facts and told of having seen her knock the smaller girl down with a club and drag her into the house. Instances of her misbehavior in church were also cited. Lucien English and Charles Sweasy corroborated the evidence of these witnesses and added other instances of the use of improper language and inhuman treatment of the children. All of these facts were stoutly denied by all members of the Duffield family. The little girls when questioned maintained that they had always been kindly used and never mistreated. Doctor Dillon was called as a medical expert and gave as his opinion that she was of unsound mind. The commission found her to be insane and she was taken to the depot in a carriage left on the 3:20 train for the sanitarium at Bartonville, accompanied by Deputy Sheriff Simmons and Miss Josie Westfall of Macomb representing the McDonough County Charity Board." Merely aberrant behavior was often ruled insane until the the late 1900s.

Acquitted and disappear 1942
Acquitted and disappear 1942
In an article about a night of unrest in Hazard, an update on the murder of Samuel Kaylor: "Sheriff Cornett said Robertson denied orally that he killed Sam Kaylor here a year ago and placed the blame on Earl Crawford, Negro, who formerly lived here. Robertson was convicted of murdering Kaylor, but obtained a new trial and had been free on bond. Crawford disappeared after being acquitted in the same case." Robertson's second trial for the murder of Samuel Kaylor apparently never happened. Robertson was convicted of the murder of Bertha Lehman mentioned in this article and sentenced to death in Jun 1942. He was electrocuted in Aug 1942.

Alta, Nannie, and George Foster
Alta, Nannie, and George Foster
Is this George Foster's home from the family photo ca 1894? Censuses show that Nannie and Alta lived with their father til his death in 1951, and there is no evidence that George ever moved from his original farm. The interior looks very old and outdated, the cast iron stove ancient for a picture that, judging by George's age in the photo, must have been taken only a few years prior his death in 1951. The cane George is holding is presumably "Old Hickory," the cane mentioned in his obituary that he used to walk in to town every day.

Alva Peak slashes his neck 1913
Alva Peak slashes his neck 1913
An odd story involving Jesse Cowser and his daughter Tracie: "Alva Peak, a young man living at Ninth and Sunny Slope, has a self-inflicted cut on his neck. He wounded, himself with a pocket knife last night in front of the J. A. Cowser home at 213 Constitution Street; and the trouble occurred about the time Miss Tracie Cowser was returning home from the Red Men's dance, at the Wimgam. Miss Cowser, returning from the dance with a friend, found Mr. Peak, and after a short conversation with Miss Cowser, he cut himself as indicated. He says that they tried to keep her father quiet, but that it was impossible. The young man has been paying some attention to the young woman, and in talking with the Gazette over the telephone this afternoon indicated that he was not a prime favorite with the father...The pocket knife which has an atrociously dull little blade, has been given a place among the relics of the city."

"An elegant bouquet came over yesterday from Mrs. R. M. Hoskinson, of Eagle Harbor, consisting of roses, marigolds, petunias, pinks, snapdragons, mignonettes, honeysuckles, bachelor buttens, dahlias, rose geraniums, and other beautiful and sweet scented things, all grown in the open air. That such flowers can be picked in this latitude in the open garden the last of October is wonderful indeed."

An Illinois Soldier's Experience 1884
An Illinois Soldier's Experience 1884
Stewart Hoskinson tells of his fighting, be shot, and taken prisoner Franklin, TN: "...I have good reason to remember that eventful evening of Nov. 30, 1864, and well remember seeing our troops who were holding the works in front of us falling back in confusion before the charge of the rebels; then hearing our Major (Motherspaw, not Motherspan) give the order to the 73d to charge to the front; then of the confused mass of our retreating men we tried in vain to check right in front of Carter's house, they rushing to the rear pell-mell through the gaps in the picket-fence, and we in as big a hurry to get to the front to salute the Johnnies...I never knew just what hour the fight ended, but at about 8 o'clock, as near as I should judge, for I had fired nearly 60 rounds. I received a shot in my left shoulder, which (barring accidents) I will carry to my grave, striking me on the point of collarbone and coming out at the backbone near the bottom of the shoulder-blade. At the time, and for three or four days, till suppuration set in and the pieces of cloth came out of the wound, I was not certain but what I had been accidentally shot by some of our men in rear of me. The blood rushed from my mouth in a stream and I thought my last hour was near, but after a short time the inward bleeding stopped and I took courage. A lull in the fring taking place shortly after, I managed to get to the rear, behind Carter's house, where I lay down for an hour or more, when I heard some one inquire if there were any of the 73d there. I answered "here," and three or four of our regiment came to me and carried me into town and left me in the brick church on the east of the turnpike, with about 100 others of our severely wounded. Having been on picket at Spring Hill the night before and rear-guard all day from there to Franklin, I was worn out, so I fell into a troubled sleep, and about midnight wakened to fnd we were prisoners. There were 190 of our wounded taken there, and at the end of 17 days, at the recapture of Franklin, we were reduced to 140. One surgeon staid with us, and with the assistance of one or two resident physicians cared for our wounds. Had it not been for the kindness of some of the ladies of Franklin I do not know how we would have fared, as what little rations of flour and poor beef was issued to us had to be cooked, and no one could do it but one....I received my discharge Feb. 10, 1865, from "gunshot wound of left shoulder," but after reaching home it proved to be an injury to the left lung also, and for nearly 30 months the wound in my back remained open, so I could blow by breath through the opening. I am suffering more or less all the time from it, and am at present drawing $12 per month pension...STUART

Andrew and Ida Hoskinsin house 1946
"OLD HOUSES are hard to find on Bainbridge. Andrew Anderson, a Swedish sailor who "jumped ship" and settled on the island in early days, and his wife, Ida Hoskinson Anderson, daughter of the "weather man," carried the boards for this home on their backs more than four miles from the head of Eagle Harbor to Island Center. Their son, Ralph, still lives in the house and uses the original well, which once had sweep and an oaken bucket."
